US Virgin Islands, St Thomas
The Best Gluten Free & Clean Food Options Island Style

St Thomas is not the easiest place when it comes to restaurants being gluten free.  All the places I have been do not have a gluten free menu however the wait staff in most cases knows about it and can help ensure their is no cross contamination when preparing the gluten free meals.

My favorite "safe" places to eat are
  1. Barefoot Buddha in Havensight.... awesome organic coffee and breakfast/lunches.  I usually order one of their bagel specials without the bagel.  There menu is not gf but you can easily get things without the gluten.  Their quiche is crustless so that is a great option.
  2. Buddha Sushi near RedHook.  They are so awesome in making things gluten free for me and they even have gluten free soy sauce so you don't have to bring in your own. This is some of the best sushi I have ever had and use to live in Japan so I'm pretty picky.
  3. XO Bistro in Redhook Plaza is great bar restaurant for lunch or dinner.  Just tell them you are gluten free and they will accommodate and help you with the menu choices.  There food is awesome and reasonably priced.
  4. Restaurant 13 on the Northside is another amazing place for dinner and has been safe for me to eat at as long as I tell them upfront.  Great views and very romantic!  You should make a reservation and ask for was a little tricky to find. 1-340-774-6800
  5. Banana Tree Restaurant at Bluebeards Castle  is by far one of the best restaurants I have eaten at on island!!  Main reason... they have Silver Fern GrassFed beef on their menu and it is pretty amazing!  This is a must try!  Enjoy.
  6. Pie Hole makes amazing Gluten Free pizzas but you must call 24 hours in advance to place your order.  It is worth it.  The place is small and super quaint and cozy.  You'll love it!
Grocery Stores

As far as grocery stores go most of them have a small section of gluten free products so it is pretty easy to get the things you need.
  1. The Fruit Bowl has a good selection of GF pastas, breads, Food For LIfe Tortillas, crackers/cookies, ect... they carry Rudi's bread.  If you are Paleo this is the best grocery store on island... amazing grassfed beef options, wild caught salmon to die for and organic produce!
  2. Gourmet Gallery has a good selection but I think a little more pricey than others.  They are the only place on the island that carries Udi's brand for breads and muffins.
  3. Cost U less has some items like cereals, gf cream of mushroom and chicken soup mixes, almond milk and random other things once in awhile.
  4. Plaza Extra is another good resource for many products.  I actually think they might have the largest selection and the cheapest prices.  I can get my kids Glutino cereal bars there for almost 2 bucks cheaper than at the Fruit Bowl.  That is just one example.
One thing to remember about all these places is that if you see it once it doesn't necessarily mean it will be there next time.
